Willesden Cemetery Talk

Wednesday, 9 June, 2021 29 Sivan 5781

7:30 PM

Willesden Jewish Cemetery opened in 1873 - soon after the establishment of the United Synagogue in 1870.  This was concurrent with the establishment of West London Reform Synagogue - did they influence each other?   The prominent leaders of traditional Ashkenazi Anglo-Jewry at the time, many of whom were esteemed by the pillars of English society, created a cemetery in keeping with the secular victorian cemeteries of the period.  Familiar household names, politicians, celebrated artists, high street giants, scientists, philanthropists - even a Prime Minister - are resting there.  Their lives are awe-inspiring - and often, their influence is still affecting us today.

The talk is by Ingrid Sellman who lives in Willesden, quite near Willesden Jewish Cemetery.  Ingrid has many relatives buried there, so her links go back decades, and she has been a regular visitor.   Previously Ingrid was a Lipreading Teacher for various London colleges, and also a Deaf Awareness Trainer and Public Speaker for the Jewish Deaf Association, she has two children and four grandchildren.

Tickets for the zoom session are £5 each - Book below or via the Synagogue Office.
