Everyday Practicalities

Listed below are a number of practical tips, pointers and recommendations by local carers to address some of the most common issues facing carers. The list will develop as recommendations are received.

Incontinence

Bowel and Bladder issues are very common but rarely talked about.  Issues should be discussed with the GP in the first instance. If necessary, they can then refer to the Urology and/or continence clinics for investigation and support.

AgeUK has produced a booklet on Bowel and Bladder problems

There are a number of products to manage symptoms. The continence clinic can provide a regular supply of incontinence products free of charge if they determine that there is an on-going need. In addition, the following websites have been recommended for products:

Swallowing / Eating issues

  • Swallowing issues - this short guide provides helpful advice on dealing with behavioural driven swallowing issues that are common as dementia progresses. Whilst the Speech & Language team (SALT) will assist those with 'mechanical' issues relating to swallowing, if the SALT team believe that the issue is dementia-related they will defer to the dieticians. Both these specialists are accessed via a referral from the GP.

Washing

  • If movement is limited, either due to an accident or progressive illness or for the elderly, then getting washed may become more challenging.  A number of waterless products are available on the market. Nilaqua is one of the largest manufacturers and is available on prescription.
