Thursday 26th September @ 2.30pm
Our speaker today is Jillian Raw, a retired solicitor and once again the East End of London will be featuring in the afternoon's talk but this is an East End far removed from the one described last month by Melvyn Eagle. This is the East End of Jack the Ripper!!
The Whitechapel Murders of 1888 and 1896: Jack the Ripper and Mr Levy
For three months in 1888, there were a series of brutal murders in the East End of London that shocked and horrified Victorian England.
In April 1896 the East End was again plunged into a state of wild excitement with news of a most brutal double murder, close to the locality of the 'Ripper Murders'. Word quickly spread that Jack the Ripper had resumed business. So too did accusations that the murderer was a Russian Jew.
Jillian's talk will explore how Victorian Society's reaction to the Whitechapel Murders of 1888 and 1896 reflected social tensions and prejudices against Jews in the East End. What happened when one of the murder victims was a Jew and his murderer an Englishman?
This promises to be a very interesting afternoon and of course our usual sumptuous tea is on offer !
For catering purposes please could you let the office know if you are coming and we would be grateful if you could have the right change for the £2 entry.
